Haleakalā Volcano
Waking up at 3 AM to drive to the summit of a dormant volcano and watch the sunrise above the clouds wasn't an option given our busy morning itinerary. Instead, we made our way to the summit of Haleakalā Volcano during the afternoon. As we drove up, anticipation grew with every turn.
My daughter Gaby can attest that driving up Haleakalā is truly not for the faint of heart. But once we arrived to the top, standing there, enveloped by the beauty of nature, we felt felt a profound sense of humility a reminder of how small we are in the grand tapestry of life. It was truly one of those remarkable experiences that stirs the soul and lingers in your memory long after.
1,048 old railway steps straight up the side of a crater, no switchbacks, no mercy. People were turning back all around me, saying it was impossible, too hard. I kept my head down and set smaller goals: just make it to the next electricity pole. Take a breath. Then the next one. My daughter kept encouraging me and all of a sudden, we were there. Best feeling in the world.
