Know Before You Go

Travel Guides

Day-by-day itineraries, local tips, where to eat, where to stay, and everything I wish I'd known before I landed. No fluff — just what actually works.

Kyoto is Japan distilled — ancient temples, bamboo groves, tea ceremonies, and streets that feel untouched by time. It rewards slow travel. The more you wander without a plan, the more you find.

Best Time to Visit

March–April (cherry blossoms) or November (autumn foliage)

Itinerary

Where to Eat

  • Nishiki Market — graze your way through 100+ stalls
  • Ippudo Ramen — rich tonkotsu broth, always a queue
  • Tofu cuisine along the Philosopher's Path
  • Pontocho alley — splurge on one proper kaiseki dinner
  • Depachika (department store basement food halls) for incredible bento

Where to Stay

  • Gion district — walk to everything, traditional atmosphere
  • Higashiyama — quieter, closer to the temples
  • Kyoto Station area — convenient for day trips to Osaka/Nara
  • Try a traditional ryokan for at least one night — worth every yen

Don't Miss

  • Fushimi Inari at dawn — completely empty, completely magical
  • A tea ceremony in a traditional machiya
  • Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) — yes it's touristy, yes it's worth it
  • Arashiyama by bicycle — rent one and explore the back roads

Pro Tip

Buy a 1-day or 2-day Kyoto bus pass — it covers almost every major sight and saves a fortune. Get it at the bus terminal outside Kyoto Station.
